Etsy is a marketplace, so a single Etsy price or personalization score would be misleading. This guide helps compare a specific custom-book listing with a commissioned studio service.
A good fit: Consider an individual Etsy maker when their complete portfolio, actual construction, revision terms, and communication match your project.

Etsy permits original seller designs as digital downloads or products made with disclosed production partners. Seller-prompted AI work is also permitted with disclosure in the listing. “Handmade” alone does not establish how every illustration was created.
Request a complete comparable example.
A cover can hide repeated faces, unreadable lettering, and missing page turns. Ask to see a complete fictional or permissioned example in the exact format you intend to buy. Do not ask a maker to expose another family’s private book or photographs.
Put the revision agreement in writing.
Describe the number of leads, the desired medium, whether you supply a finished story, and what counts as a correction versus a new scene. Agree who checks translation, when the printer receives files, and what happens if the shipped book is damaged. These are useful questions for Again, Please’s pilot too.
Compare service and ownership, not a thumbnail price.
A downloadable PDF, a custom illustrated manuscript, and a printed board book are different purchases. A specific maker may be the better choice today if their terms and finished work meet your needs.
