The Little Car That Took the Scenic Route
There’s plenty to stop for on the way round.
The little yellow car rolled out of its blue garage. The paper road bent round the houses and disappeared behind a hill. “What’s round there?” wondered the car. It set off to find out.
Round the bend was a tunnel through Cushion Mountain. “Beep!” called the car. “Beep,” came the answer. The car tried two. “Beep-beep!” “Beep-beep,” answered the tunnel. The car rolled through, listening all the way.
On the other side, three wooden ducks were crossing the road. One duck went across. Then another. The smallest stopped to look at a red button. The car waited while the duck peered into each of its four holes. Then off it waddled. “Three,” said the car, and rolled on.
The road followed a blue-scarf river. A red bus was parked beside it. “Look,” said the bus. “Here comes a boat.” The car pulled in beside its friend. They watched the paper boat come under the bridge and drift past, its pointed nose bobbing.
“Bye, Bus!” The car followed the road to the roundabout. There was its blue garage. Round went the car. There was the garage again. “One more,” said the car. It went all the way round, then turned in for home.
The car rolled into its garage and stopped. “Beep,” it said softly. Its engine ticked as it cooled. Outside, the road curled away behind the armchair. The car stayed snug in its parking place.
