Come In, Big Bear
Kit has big news. Lolo has rules.
Lolo lives across the street and runs his walkie-talkies by the rules: call signs, radio letters, and always say over. So when the ice cream truck comes, Kit’s big news can’t get through. A funny story for ages 6–8 about a grandpa who hears more than he lets on.

Come In, Big Bear
Kit has big news. Lolo has rules.
Kit’s grandpa, Lolo, lived right across the street, and he had two walkie-talkies. “One for you, one for me,” he said. “You are Sparrow. I am Big Bear. And when you finish talking, you say over. Over.”
Kit ran home and up the stairs to her window. She waited for something important to say. “Big Bear, this is Sparrow. I have one sock on. Over.” Crackle. “Roger, Sparrow. Good sock. Over.”
Then, far down the street, a song began. Dee-dee-DEE, dee-dee-DOO. The ice cream truck! Kit pressed the button so hard her thumb went white. “LOLO! THE ICE CREAM TRUCK!”
Crackle. “Who is this?” said Lolo. “I only talk to Sparrows. Over.”
“Big Bear, this is Sparrow! The ice cream truck is here and it’s playing the song and it’s RIGHT THERE and…” Kit let go of the button. Nothing. Lolo was waiting. “…OVER!”
“Say again, Sparrow,” said Lolo. “Spell it. Radio letters only. Over.” Kit didn’t know radio letters. She knew ice cream. “I-C-E! Icy! Cold! Eat-it-NOW!”
Crackle. “That’s India, Charlie, Echo,” said Lolo. “Close enough. Over.” Then the song started up. It got quieter. And quieter.
The street was quiet. Kit sat on the floor. “Big Bear,” she said, very small. “This is Sparrow. It’s gone. Over.” Nobody answered.
Knock, knock, knock. Kit ran down the stairs and opened the door. There stood Big Bear, with two ice cream cones, dripping. “Delivery for Sparrow,” he said. “Over.”
Kit took the bigger one. “Roger, Big Bear,” she said. “Over and OUT.”
